Negative thoughts often overwhelm my mind and drop me into a state of overthinking. I lose focus and presence in the present moment. I can only think about these negative thoughts.

Where do these thoughts come from? Well, I create them. Is this necessarily a bad thing? I don’t know yet, but what I do know is that you cannot stop negative thoughts from coming into your mind. It’s not possible.

However, you can stop these negative thoughts from overtaking your mind through actively flooding yourself with positive thoughts.

These positive thoughts will drown the negative thoughts resulting in a net positive of thoughts.

You may ask, how do I do this, especially when my mind is consumed by negative thoughts?

By finding things that generate positive thoughts.

Negative thoughts may come into your mind subconsciously, but through this method, you can consciously create positive thoughts.

You have control over how many positive thoughts you give yourself.

For me, good music, uplifting Youtube or social media videos, or good conversations with loved ones provide me with positive thoughts and awareness that my negative thoughts are often not valid. While listening, watching, or talking, I feel better and actively create positive thoughts in my mind. These may be affirmations, optimistic thoughts about the world or my future, or just things that I’m grateful for (which is often the person that I’m talking to).

If you are flooded with negative thoughts, put your headphones on, and listen to your favorite pump-up song, like one you would listen to right before you go for a PR in the gym. Or watch uplifting videos on YouTube, social media, or your favorite show. Or call someone you love and talk to them about what you are feeling. For me, it always feels good to get negative thoughts out of my head. My mind feels like a closed water bottle that is about to burst.

Talk to a loved one and open that bottle’s cap, letting your thoughts flow out. You will feel better and see that your negative thoughts are often just illusions. They don’t exist.

Negative thoughts, especially an anticipation of something in the future, are illusions as they haven’t even happened yet. Therefore, it is just your own mind making things up.

Next time negative thoughts are overwhelming you, give this method of flooding your mind with positive thoughts a try.

You may not be able to control your negative thoughts, but you can control your positive ones.

This is powerful.

You have control.
